Celebrating Over 60 years of Joy and Wonder
Looking for a place that feels like exactly what Kindergarten and Preschool should be? Where children are surrounded by the serenity of wide plank wooden floors indoors and years of love and grace throughout? Where they can experience the joy of being out of doors in every season? Children at London Grove Friends Kindergarten and Little Acorns Preschool are given the gift of jumping in fall leaves, being all mittened up in winter sledding on the hill, peddling a trike on the grounds, flying kites on a windy day, and planting spring bulbs.
Chester County is a spectacular area, and London Grove Friends Kindergarten embodies all that is lovely and wonderful about this landscape. With a 350 year old historic Penn Oak standing sentry, children can be seen painting it massive trunk and bark and gravely considering its hundreds of arched branches and absorbing its history.
London Grove Friends is simply a Kindergarten and Preschool program. There is no upper school because we believe that focusing on a child’s first experience in school is a gift, given once and returned over a lifetime. We’re a unique school where the focus of all learning is nature based and every aspect of learning, from reading to art, embodies this philosophy.
London Grove Friends Kindergarten offers Little Acorns Preschool for 3 and 4 year olds, Half-day and Full-day Kindergarten, with busing provided by seven local school districts for Kindergarten students. Our class size are small, adhering to a 1:9 teacher to student ratio.
Educational Philosophy
• To foster an appreciation and curiosity of nature and the world around us.
• To be aware of and respect the individual.
• To stress honesty and sincerity using the method of example.
• To encourage flexible thinking and the development of problem solving.
• To work creatively.
• To teach body awareness through games, rhythm, and movement.
History
The London Grove Friends Kindergarten is living testimony to the care of its many friends, particularly Frank and Helen Walton and their family, who have nurtured the school physically and spiritually. Yet it is to two others that Helen Walton bestowed these words of dedication:
Our Kindergarten reflects Margaret W. Thomforde’s light as she devoted herself to the young lives around her. As a well-trained teacher, Margaret boldly established the London Grove Kindergarten complete with teacher, enrollment and a Friends philosophy.
Ruth W. Fales enthusiastically continued this creative project since 1960. She offered children her many talents, her sincerity, her understanding, and her special love of nature and its wonders. She, too, loved the children, and they responded.
Our school continues in this spirit inherited from the tender nurturing of wise, caring, and conscientious leaders since 1960. The influence of Ruth as well as Margaret will live on in the lives of the Kindergarten children.
